Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) is a fast-growing evergreen shrub or small tree widely used for privacy screening and hedging due to its dense, glossy foliage. Despite its name, it is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae) rather than the true laurel family.
Key Characteristics
Appearance: Large, leathery, emerald green leaves that are glossy on top and paler underneath. It produces upright spikes of small, fragrant creamy-white flowers in spring, followed by cherry-sized berries that turn from red to purple-black.
Growth: Vigorous and fast-growing, often reaching 5–15 meters (16–49 ft) if left untrimmed, though it is easily maintained at hedge heights of 1.5–3 meters.
Hardiness: Extremely frost hardy and drought-tolerant once established. It thrives in full sun to deep shade and tolerates most soil types, including clay and alkaline soils.
