Grevillea rosmarinifolia, commonly known as the Rosemary Grevillea, is a popular, hardy, evergreen Australian native shrub known for its needle-like foliage and bird-attracting flowers.
It is a versatile plant suitable for a range of garden uses.
Key Characteristics and Growing Conditions
Foliage: The shrub has dense, dark-green, prickly, needle-like leaves that resemble those of the rosemary plant, which gives it its common name. The foliage offers a safe habitat for small native birds.
Flowers: It produces masses of red, pink, or scarlet and cream spider-like flowers, primarily during winter and spring, but often intermittently throughout the year. These nectar-rich flowers attract honeyeaters, butterflies, and other insects.
Size: Grevillea rosmarinifolia typically grows as a small to medium, rounded shrub, usually reaching a height of 1-2 metres and a width of 1-3 metres, depending on the specific form or cultivar.
Hardiness: It is a very hardy and adaptable plant, tolerant of drought, frost, a range of soils (provided they are well-drained), and coastal conditions.
Maintenance: This plant is generally low-maintenance. It thrives in a full sun to partial shade position in well-drained soil. Regular, light pruning after the main flowering season is recommended to maintain its shape and promote bushy growth.
Fertilisation: Grevilleas are sensitive to high levels of phosphorus. It is crucial to use a native-specific fertiliser that is low in phosphorus or an alternative like blood and bone, applied in the spring.
