Atriplex nummularia, commonly known as Old Man Saltbush, is a hardy, fast-growing Australian native shrub known for its attractive silver-grey foliage, use as edible bush tucker, and resilience in tough conditions.
It is widely distributed across arid and semi-arid inland regions of mainland Australia.
Appearance: A large, woody, sprawling shrub, typically growing 2-3 meters high and 2-5 meters wide. It features distinctive rounded, irregularly shaped leaves with a scaly, silvery-grey coating.
Habitat & Resilience: Naturally thrives in saline soils, clay flats, and low-lying areas. It is highly tolerant of drought, salt, wind, and poor or alkaline soils, making it a key species for soil stabilisation and revegetation projects. It will not tolerate waterlogging or excess humidity.
Flowers: Produces small, inconspicuous yellow-green flowers throughout the year. The male and female flowers typically grow on separate plants (dioecious).
