Growing a Venus flytrap successfully requires specific conditions that mimic its natural habitat.
Light: Provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. A bright, sunny windowsill is a good indoor spot; otherwise, use a strong artificial grow light.
Water: Use only distilled water, rainwater, or reverse osmosis (RO) water. Tap water's minerals can be harmful over time. The pot should sit in a shallow tray of water (around 1 cm deep) to keep the soil consistently moist.
Soil: Use a nutrient-free, acidic potting mix, typically a blend of sphagnum peat moss and perlite or sand. Do not use regular potting soil or add any fertiliser.
Feeding: If grown outdoors, they will catch enough food on their own. Indoors, feeding one or two traps a month with small, live insects is sufficient. Do not feed them raw meat or trigger the traps without food, as this wastes energy.
Dormancy: Venus flytraps require a crucial winter dormancy period June, July, August, where growth slows and leaves may blacken. During this time, keep the plant in a cooler spot and the soil just damp, not sitting in water.
